The British system of education did have the following negative impact:

a. The English system of education ignored the learning of Indian languages and texts and emphasized on western learning.
b. The new system of rules and regulations that the British had set up for the pathshalas had a negative impact.
c. Pathshalas that did not  support new rules were not given government support and grants.
d. Gurus who wanted retain independence found difficult to compete with government aided schools.
e. Students in these pathshalas were generally from poor background, it became difficult for them to adhere to new rules.
f. The British ignored education for the masses.
g. Mahatma Gandhi further criticized British education on the grounds that it has enslaved us and that modern education did not focus on the all round development of an individual.

  1. British succeded in making Indians having British tastes.
  2. In pathshalas,children were not giving fees. So, children from poor families were also educated. But in British schools paying fees was necessary. As a result,only those children who belonged to rich families could get education.
  3. In pathshalas, childen were given holidays in harvest season and sowing time. British schools didn't have any such provision. That's why there were less students who were admitted in schools by their parents.
  4. British schools conducted exams and no such exams were conducted in pathshalas. So children were afraid of them and did not attended schools or left study.
