Does food go into the rumen or reticulum first(of a ruminant)?

Solution:

Digestion in ruminating animals:
The ruminating animals like cattle have stomach with four chambers – reticulum, rumen, omasum and abomasums.

  1. The ruminants (cattle) do not have incisor or canine tooth.
  2. Thus they only tear and swallow the foliages like grasses or leaves but cannot chew properly.
  3. The swallowed food goes to the first chamber called rumen. Here the food gets partially digested and transferred to the second chamber.
  4. From this second chamber the partially digested food again goes back to mouth.
  5. Due to half way digestion the food matter becomes softer than earlier and the animal can chew it well. Again they swallow the chewed food for the second time where further digestion is carried on.
  6. Omasum does not secrete any enzymes. In this part only some water gets absorbed.
  7. Abomasum is the true stomach where enzymes are secreted and the food gets digested.
