Does hydra undergoes regeneration to form a new hydra? Or the tentacles of hydra go under regenration to form a new tentacle for the hydra? Ml

Dear Student,

The most common mode of reproduction in hydra is budding. However, hydra can also undergo regeneration where the lost body parts are regenerated. Regeneration is the type of asexual reproduction. It is a power or ability of a living organism to re-grow the part of the body that gets broken off or cut. When it has involvement with asexual reproduction, then the broken part regenerate into a new individual of the same type.

Hydra exhibits Morphallaxis type of regeneration. In this type of regeneration, the lost part is replaced by the change in the tissues present in the lost part and each injured part forms a complete organism.

Head?regeneration?in?Hydrais highly plastic, as it is maintained after elimination of the interstitial cell lineage, indicating that epithelial cells alone can drive the headregeneration?process efficiently although with a significant delay.

The cells of the body part which gets cut in hydra divide rapidly to make a group of cells. These cells present in the accumulated cells go back to their respective positions in order to regenerate the organism. However, Regeneration in Hydra does not take place in only the tenticles. The whole body has the ability to regenerate from the cut body part with the help of cluster of cells formed as explained above.
