Does non - green plants also carry photosynthesis process ?

Dear Student,

Yes, photosynthesis can also occur in plants with non- green leaves . Although they have chlorophyll, but it is masked by other coloured pigments.

The examples of photosynthesising  plants with colour of leaves other than green are as follows:

Sweetheart caladium with pink coloured leaves
'Purple Heart' (Tradescantia pallida) with purple leaves

But, there are some non green plants which cannot perform photosynthesis and so depend on other organisms for their food . For example; Cuscuta

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert light energy to chemical energy and prepare their food. Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts.

Chlorophyll is the main pigment, which absorbs light during photosynthesis and responsible for the green colour of leaves. Chlorophyll absorbs light in the violet-blue and reddish-orange region. It reflects green light, hence leaves appear green in colour. Apart from chlorophyll, plants also contain various accessory pigments, which also absorb light at different wavelengths, e.g. xanthophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanin, etc. These pigments are responsible for imparting the plant parts with their distinctive colour. These accessory pigments are present in the green leaves too.

Photosynthesis occurs in those plants as well, which have non-green leaves. Chlorophyll is present in lesser quantity and other pigments mask the green colour of chlorophyll, so they do not appear green but perform photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll ‘a’ is the main pigment associated with photosynthesis as the rate of photosynthesis is maximum at the wavelength, which corresponds to the maximum absorption for chlorophyll a.

Hope This Helps You :)

Dear student,

Yes. Some non- green plants also carry photosynthesis. Pitcher plant is a non- green?plant, that can perform photosynthesis.
