Plants like other living organisms require oxygen to break down food to release energy. This process is known as respiration. Plants take oxygen either directly from the atmosphere through stomata in leaves or utilise the oxygen produced during photosynthesis. 

Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during photosynthesis. They take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide during respiration.

Generally plants take but when they performe photosynthesis it take carbon dioxide
