drawbacks of j j thomson atomic models

Thomson's model of atom : Plum pudding model

Features: An atom consists of positively charged sphere and the electrons are embedded in it. So mass of the atom is assumed to be uniformly distributed. The negative and positive charges are equal in magnitude. Hence, this model was able to explain the overall neutrality of an atom.

Limitation: Even though the J.J.Thomson theory explained the overall neutrality of an atom, it was not consistent with the results of Rutherford's experiment.

Hope its useful ! Cheers !!

This model could explain the electrical neutrality of the atom but failed to explain the observations of the Rutherford alpha particle scattering experiment.

Hi,

Thomson model of atom was not able to explain the results of experiments obtained by other scientists such as Earnest Rutherford, who was performing experiments on radioactivity.

Hope this helps.

Best Wishes!

ACCORDING TO THOMSON'S MODEL IT IS SEEN THAT PROTONS,ELECTRONS & NEUTRONS ARE EQUALLY ARRANGED. BUT FROM RUTHERFORD'S ALPHA PARTICLE SCATTERING EXPERIMENT IT WAS NOTED THAT MOST OF THE SPACE IN AN ATOM IS EMPTY BECAUSE MOST OF THE ALPHA PARTICLES PASSED THROUGH METAL FOIL WITHOUT REFLECTION.THUS THOMSON'S MODEL OF AN ATOM COULD NOT EXPLAIN ALPHA PARTICLE SCATTERING PHENOMENON. ALSO  THIS MODEL EXPLAINS THE ELECTRICAL NEUTRALITY OF AN ATOM BUT IS NOT CONSISTENT WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS....

HOPE THIS HELPS....

 it failed to explain:

(1)how the positive and negative charges are arranged in an atom .

(2)there is no experimental proof of his atomic model.

if u like my answer please thumbs up

(3)there is no electronic configuration of sub-atomic particles (electrons, protons and neutrons) given by his model.

the (3) point is the drawback of rutherford atomic model.

sorry
