During pachytene stage of meiosis , the chromosomes appear ---

1)single stranded 2)4-stranded 3)6-stranded 4)8-stranded

During leptotene and zygotene chromosomes appear single stranded because sister chromatids are still so tightly bound to each other that they cannot be separately seen. But during pachytene each chromosome become short and thick and divide into two distinct chromatids. During this stage one can clearly see the four chromatids of homologous chromosomes (two of each one of the homologous chromosomes). So, during pachytene chromosomes appear four srtanded.
