Early man defied some of the inanimate matter and.....a common feature.....animate objects. Explain these two lines.

Dear Student,

The given statement means that early man used to worship (deified) some non living things like wind , sea , fire etc. along with some animals and plants. These non living things or plants and animals that were worshipped had a common feature that they generated (evoked) a sense of admiration(awe) or fear in the minds of early men , who in turn started respecting and worshipping them.
