Evaluate how variation, adaptation and natural selection are major components of evolution

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Variation can be defined as the changes in the genetic material or in the alleles of the genes of a population. Variations which are beneficial for the population and help in the better survival of the population are naturally selected. Accumulation of many such variations result in development of new species. Therefore, variation is a component of evolution.

Adaptations are mutations, or genetic changes, which helps an organism in surviving in its environment.

The mechanism of natural selection acts through individuals as it determines which individuals have the best adaptations for reproductive success. It is most often defined to operate on heritable traits, because these are the traits that directly participate in evolution. Hence, natural selection is a part of evolution.
