5.  Give the chracteristic features of the following

a) Urochordata
b) Cephalochordata
c) Chondrichthyes
d) Ostichthyes

Dear student,

Please find below the solutions:
a) Distinguishing features of urochordates-
1.Marine invertebrate.
2.Sac-like unsegmented body.
3.Adult animal do not have notochord, nerve cord or tail.
4.They possess tubular openings known as siphons which are used to filter the water.
5.They occur in colonies known as zooids.

b) Distinguishing features of cephalochordates-
1.Presence of notochord that persists throughout the life.
2.The presence of pharyngeal gill slits
3.Presence of post-anal tail.
4.Brain is small and poorly developed.
5.No true vertebrae.

Pisces can be divided into two classes – Class Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) and Class Osteichthyes (bony fishes).
c) Distinguishing features of Class Chondrichthyes –
  • skins are covered with placoid scales
  • skeleton is cartilaginous
  • tail fins are asymmetrical
  • fertilization is internal
  • cold blooded
  • no external ears
  • operculum over gills are absent.

d) Distinguishing features of Class Osteichthyes
  • Skins are covered with cycloid scales
  • Skeleton is bony
  • Tail fins are symmetrical
  • Operculum is present
  • No external ears
  • Cold blooded
  • Fertilization is external.

UROCHORDATE: the group of protochordates having notochord only in larval tail.
CEPHALOCHORDATE: the group  of protochordates which are characterised by persistent or permanent notochord etended from anterior to prosterior end.
CHONDRICHTHES: they are marine animals having streamlined body and cartilagenous exxoskeleton.
                                    having heterocerol tail.
gills are not covered by operculum.
                                    viviparous in nature.
                                    eg : scolidon,terpedo, sting fish
OSTICHTHYES: they are marine and freshwatery with bony exoskeleton.
                             having homocerol tail.
                             gills are covered by operculum.
                             oviparous in nature.
                             eg: sea horse, exoceatus(marine)
                                   rohu,catla(fresh watery)
