This paragraph talks about the political reasons that led to the Revolt of 1857 . Britishers took over various Indian territories or princely states which led to the displacement of the old ruling parties . The rulers who accepted Subsidiary alliance which was basically a treaty between the British East India Company and the Indian princely states, by virtue of which the Indian kingdoms lost their authority to the English and this led to the loss of Independence of these rulers. Their armies became completely dependent on the British.
Also, the introduction of Doctrine of Lapse by Lord Dalhousie , which stated that a princely state would automatically come under the East India Company if the ruler of that state dies without a male heir made Rani Lakshmi Bai against Britishers. Rani Lakshmi Bai played a pivotal role in the Revolt of 1857.
