Explain ball mining for nanoparticle synthesis.

Solution

Ball milling is a mechanical technique that is used to grind powders into fine particles. The reactants are broken by using mechanical forces.
Ball milling is performed at room temperature on dry mixtures of powders.
Advantages -
1. No need for high temperatures,
2. No hazardous solvents needed, and
3. No complex in situ polymerization processes involved.
4. This results into the production of evenly dispersed solids that are stable.

This process makes use of metallic balls acting as grinding media and rotating shell to create centrifugal force. In this process, the precursor is broken down by randomly striking with grinding media in the rotating shell to create shear and compression force which helps to overcome the weak  Vander Waal's interactions eventually leading to breaking. Eventually we obtain the nanoparticles by this method.
