Foot and mouth disease in an infectious disease caused by virus. It mainly affects the cloved hoofed animals including domestic and wild animals. The incubation period of the virus ranges from 1 to 12 days. It mainly affects feet and mouth of the animals.

Symptoms:
It is characterised by high fever initially which declines after few days. The animal develops blisters in mouth that leads to excessive secretion of saliva. Also the blisters develop on the feet. This disease also results in weight loss in animals.

Transmission:
  1. Through animal to animal contact
  2. Through fodder or animate objects
  3. Through aerosols
Treatment:
Food and mouth disease virus mutates rapidly, hence no effective treatment or vaccination is available. However, vaccines available provide temporary treatment only for few months to one year. However, the animals should be kept in isolation and mouth and feet washed regularly to prevent secondary infections.
