The process of detecting the region of DNA, that encode genes (open reading frames) is known as gene prediction. The process also identifies protein-coding genes, regulatory regions and their functions, RNA genes.
Gene counting is a process of estimating gene frequencies. It uses computational biology and counts the number of copies of the gene present in an individual.
Gene prediction algorithm uses various data such as coding segments (exons), non-coding segments (introns) etc and then finally produce log-likelihood scoring model using statistical properties. (You will read much about it, in your higher studies).
