explain how an earthquake occurs

An earthquake can occur when two tectonic plates rub against each other, causing friction. A large earthquake, like the one that caused the massive Tsunami a couple years ago, occurs when one plate gets stuck and the tension builds up and is finally released in a jarring shock. Kind of like a rubber band being pulled further apart and then released

Earthquakes are caused by a disturbance deep under the Earth's crust.the outer most layer of the Earth's crust is fragmented (broken into small pieces). Each fragment is called a plate and are unstable. When the plates brush past one another or a plate goes under another due to collision, some disturbance is caused in Earth's crust, resulting in tremors and earthquakes.
