Spatial heterogeneity (it is not homogeneity) refers to the uneven distribution of of each species within an area. in tropics with spatial heterogeneity has a mix of concentrations of multiple species of plants or animals.

Tropics has higher net primary productivity as plants in tropics utilize energy efficiently which leads to high species diversity.
