Iqtas were pieces of lands of varying sizes that were given by Qutbuddin Aibak, the founder of the Slave dynasty, in lieu of salaries to nobles and officers.
Those holding the Iqtas did not receive the ownership of the land but only the right to earn revenue from it. The Iqtas were transferable, that is they could be assigned from one officer to the other. Balban was against of making the Iqtas hereditary.
