Explain lines in brackets
[An old lady who was near him, ran her hand over his chest , looked into his eyes and said , "The janewara 4 is still there. he hasn't lost his caste. " She went away soon after that . Ranga laughed. ]

Dear student

When Ranga came back from Bangalore, the villagers expected him to have changed. Some thought that he might have abandoned his caste. To check this, an old woman felt Ranga's back to see if he was still wearing his Janewara, a sacred thread worn by Brahmins. Once she felt that it was still there, she announced in a satisfied way that Ranga had not abandoned his caste. Ranga found this humorous and laughed.

this line means that ranga after going to bangalore when he came back people thought that after coming back from city he has lost his caste by removing the janewara. to check that an old lady came and ran her hand over chest and looking into his eyes she said that he did not forgot his caste. this line wants to tells us about the  tradition in Indian society. now a days people are forgetting their caste and perform intercaste marriages and some even change their  religion.
