explain meiosis

  • Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs only in the reproductive cells. That is why it is termed as germ cell division.
  • In meiosis, the daughter cells will carry half the number of chromosomes (haploid – n) when compared to the genetic material of the parent cell (diploid -2n). Hence, meiosis is also known as reduction division.
  • It occurs during the formation of gametes in animals and spores in higher plants.
  • In meiosis, the nucleus divides twice and it has two stages. They are Meiosis I and Meiosis II.

Meiosis  is a special type of cell division necessary forsexual reproduction in eukaryotes. The cells produced by meiosis aregametes or spores. In many organisms, including all animals and land plants(but not some other groups such as fungi), gametes are called sperm and egg cells.
