explain meiosis
- Meiosis is a type of cell division that occurs only in the reproductive cells. That is why it is termed as germ cell division.
- In meiosis, the daughter cells will carry half the number of chromosomes (haploid – n) when compared to the genetic material of the parent cell (diploid -2n). Hence, meiosis is also known as reduction division.
- It occurs during the formation of gametes in animals and spores in higher plants.
- In meiosis, the nucleus divides twice and it has two stages. They are Meiosis I and Meiosis II.
