explain the adaptation shown by the hydrophilus flower

Dear Student,

Pollination in water is quite a rare process.Some of the adaptation of the pollen grains are;
  • Pollen grains are long ribbon like and carried along with the water current.
  • The pollen grains are protected from wetting by the mucilaginous covering.
  • For Example in Vallisneria , the stalk of the flower is long so as to reach the flower to the surface of the water.The pollen grains are released on to the water surface, so water current passively moves them into the stigma.

  1.  Flowers are mostly unisexual, inconspicuous and small.
  2. They are without fragrance, bright colour and nectar.
  3. Floral parts are unwettable i.e., coated with mucilage.
