Explain the ANF mechanism of regulation of kidney function.

Dear student.

ANF means Atrial Natriuretic Factor. It is a hormonal substance produced by the right atrium of the heart in most mammals. It is an important component of circulatory regulation.

ANF helps in relaxation of glomerular arterioles and mesangial cells and simultaneously constricting efferent arterioles. As a result of which there occurs rise in capillary hydrostatic pressure, which causes loss of salt and water through urine.

Regulation of Kidney Function. When there is excessive loss of fluid from the body, osmoreceptors are activated which stimulate the hypothalamus to release ADH – antidiuretic hormone from neurohypophysis. ... ADH may also increase the blood pressure thereby increasing the glomerular blood flow.
