Explain the difference between the electrochemical series and metal activity series.Explain why sodium is placed below calcium in electrochemical series, sodium being a more reactive element than calcium.Explain proper difference between ELECTROCHEMICAL and METAL ACTIVITY

Dear Student,

The arrangement of elements in increasing order of electrode potential E0 is known as electrochemical series. As per IUPAC rule, The series is made on the basis of standard reduction potential which is measured using standard hydrogen electrode.

The reactivity series (also known as the activity series) is a series in which metals arranged in the decreasing order of reactivity. Thus the most reactive metal is placed at the top of the series while the least reactive metal is placed at the bottom of the series.

Calcium is placed above sodium in electrochemical series due to low reduction potential of Ca  and high oxidation potential of Ca given in the table
