Explain the original idea of tracing evolutionary relationships

Evolutionary relationships can be traced by comparing the genetic sequences of the organisms, there are various software's available which can draw a phylogenetic tree. A few examples of these softwares are PHYLIP, Clustal W etc. By study the fossils (palaeontology) and by studying their structural design homologous and analogous which can give evidences of common ancestors.
