explain the process of nomenclature of restriction endonucleus with suitable example.

Dear student,

During nomenclature of restriction endonucleases the following points are kept in mind. The name should be such that it-
  1. Indicates the genus and species of the organism from which it is isolated.
  2. Indicates the strain of the relevant species by using a letter, number or its combination.
  3. Indicate specific restriction modification system present in the same organism (or strain) or the order of discovery in the organism by using a roman numeral.

EXAMPLE:
1. The name of EcoRI restriction enzyme is derived as:

Escherichia (genus)

co coli (species)

: RY13 (strain)

: first identified in the bacterium

2. The  restriction enzyme Hind II was isolated from Haemophilus influenza .
So, Hin stands for H. influenza and
d represents the Rd strain.
It is Hind II because it belongs to the type II endonuclease.

Regards  .
