Explain the special love that the father envisions in Elizabeth Jennings poem

The poem talks about generation gap which is also acknowledged by the father. He realises that there are lot of differences between him and his son and, he accepts that often he is not able to understand his son's view-point. However, the father really loves his child and does not want to be severed from him for life. He desperately looks for a way to connect or bond with his son. He is even willing to forget and forgive his son for all the different opinions and stances they have had. He found his son to be wasteful in his various attempts and his wish to establish himself on different grounds than his father but, he says that he would forget it all because of his love for his child. He just  wants his son to return to him and wants to see his son prosper on the same grounds on which he had established his family. This shows the father's love for his son. However, this love is stifling in the sense that the father still doesn't attempt to give his son his own space to breath in. He simply wants his son to follow his foot steps in every case. Nevertheless, the father expresses his wish and hope of reunion with his beloved child, which is very touching.
