Explain the term 'the mania of owning things'.

what is it with "owning things"? i have never really understood this. if there were a spectrum for measuring the degree of both the desire for, and for "owning things" itself, i am fairly confident that i would fall very near the bottom of the extremes (at least, for people in industrialized nations): i don't like "big" things, i don't like "new" things, i don't like "high tech" things, and i really don't like "having" things. everything i own will fit neatly into a station wagon (which i don'thave)--and for a significant portion of my adult life, most of it has been stored at friends' houses, while everything ipractically owned fit into a backpack, or a bicycle trailer. and most of what i own is older than i am, or pretty near--the most high tech thing i own is probably this laptop.

my reasons are varied: most new things simply don't interest or appeal to me (aesthetically and "functionally"); i don't like technological things which i cannot disassemble and/or repair; i am nomadic, and having too many things is simply a burden; and, frankly, i have ethical qualms with wastefulness.

certainly, i can understand the desire to have those things which are necessary for one's passions and occupations, but i am talking about the sort of consumerism that goes well beyond this--i mean, does a person really "need" three televisions?

why do so many people have, or wish to have, so many things? is it largely a product of consumer "brainwashing" and manipulation? is it a product of our cultural mores and inclinations, i.e. some aspect of protestantism (whether one is "religious" or not, such has an impact nevertheless in america and much of europe), some aspect of our obsession with "independence" and "individualism", etc.? is it something intrinsic and biological (i.e. for modern, sedentary humans)? is there something else to it?

and given that i placed this in the philosophy subforum, such is the nature of the responses i am looking for.
