The carbon atoms forming different organic molecules are referred to as carbon skeleton. During respiration, the carbon skeleton like glucose is broken down by glycolysis to form other carbon skeletons like pyruvate which intrun act as precursor to synthsise other organic molecules (carbon skeletons). For example, $\alpha$-ketoglutaric acid produced during respiration gives rise to glutamate on reductive amination.
