It was a system on the basis of which the priests (Brahmins) grouped people in the society.

· There were four varnas- Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras.

· The first varna was Brahmins- this group were allowed to learn Vedas and perform sacrifices and receive gifts.

· The second varna included Kshatriyas- they fought battles and protected the kingdoms.

· The third varna was Vaishyas- it included farmers, herders and traders.

·       The last varna was of the Shudras- Shudras were the lowest varna and had to serve the other three groups.
