explain the working of a lightning conductor?

How a lightning conductor works:A lightning conductor is a metal rod connecting the highestpoint on a building to the earth. Its purpose is to protect the buildingfrom a damaging discharge of electricity between the atmosphere andthe building, that is, a lightning strike. Lightning rods are very simple by design, the original was inventedback in 1750 by Benjamin Franklin. During electrical storms, huge amounts of electric charge areseparated in clouds. Charges near the bottom of clouds induceequally large charges in the earth beneath, on trees and on buildings. When the accumulated voltage is high enough, a discharge occurs, eitherwithin the cloud or between the cloud and the earth. A lightning conductor isusually made of thick copper and is buried deeply in the earth as thisprovides a low resistance path for any flow of electric charge between theearth and the atmosphere. Lightning has been proven to follow the path of least resistance, the mainpurpose of lightning rods is to provide a safe path with very little resistance.Lightning bolts have a tendency to "Jump" once they make contact with theground continuing their search for less resistance.

lightning conductor is a device used to protect building from the effect of lighning. a matallic rod taller than than the building is installed in the walls of the building during its construction. one end is kept out in the air and other is buried deep in rhe ground.the rod provides easy route for transfer of electric charges to the ground.
