Dear Student,

The Britishers were threatened by the growing hatred towards them by the Princely States. Due to this, the British Administrators decided to make some changes in the policy. 

The previous policy was that of Policy of Subordinate Isolation. This meant that 

The policy of Subordinate Isolation (1813-1857)

The Indian states were supposed to acknowledge the Supremacy of the British Crown and behave as subordinates and lose all external sovereignty. 

With the policy of Subordinate Union, the princely states which had been loyal to the Crown in the 1857 revolt were assured that their kingdoms would not be annexed. They could still be punished but not annexed. 

The doctrine of Lapse was also removed. If the Ruler of that princely state did not have a genetic heir then his state would be annexed. However, after the removal of the Doctrine of Lapse, it meant that the princely state rulers could now adopt and make the adopted child their heir. 

Additionally, the Princely States were given full freedom in terms of Internal Matters. 

Although, the number of soldiers in their armies were restricted and getting into a coalition with any other foreign power was abolished.
