explain with the help of neat diagram how does sound travel in air

Dear Student,

Sound is a form of energy that is transferred from one point to the another in the medium in form of longitudinal waves in case of gases and liquids and transverse waves or longitudinal waves in solids. Sound requires a material medium of finite elasticity and density to travel. When sound travels though a medium the matter particles are displaced thus stress and strains are produced in the medium. Again particles of medium undergoes vibrations too, heat is generated in the medium.
