Fear or/and conscience - what worked behind the boys decision of returning the stolen house ?

Dear Student,
The answer to your question is as follows:
The boys were aware of the Garoghlanian family policy of honesty. When John Byro caught them with his horse he recognised it immediately, yet refused to charge the boys of theft owing to their family's honesty thus attacking the boys' conscience and guilt. This awakened their conscience and they were grateful to John Byro for this wonderful gesture and returned the horse.
