in triangle ACE, as AC = AE, angles opp to it will be equal, so angle CAE + angle ACE + angle AEC = 180
44 + 2x = 180  2x = 136  x = 136/2 = 68
angle AEB = 180 - x (linear pair)
 angle AEB = 180 - 68 = 112
in triangle ABE, angle AEB + ABE + BAE = 180 (ASP)
112 + y+ 40 = 180  y = 180 - 152  y = 28

therefore, x = 68 and y = 28
