For the complex [Fe(C0)5], write the hybridization, magnetic character and spin of the complex. (At. Number : Fe = 26 )

Dear student
Please find the solution to the asked query:

In the complex, [Fe(CO)5] , Fe is present in the zero oxidation state
So its configuration is 3d64s2
As  CO is a strong filed ligand, it forces pairing of the unpaired electrons, and thus the hybridisation of the Fe atom becomes dsp3

It is a diamagnetic complex as all electrons are paired.

Spin of the complex is :   Low spin. This is because the complex formed is an Inner orbital complex [ where the inner d orbitals are used in the hybridisation] which are Low spin in nature.
As there are no unpaired electrons n =0 and thus the magnetic moment of the complex  [B.M =n(n+2) B.M] is 0

Hope this information will clear your doubts regarding the topic. If you have any other doubts please ask here on the forum and our experts will try to solve them as soon as possible.
