For the same value of angle of incidence the angle of refraction in three media A,Band C are 15 degree,25 degree and 35 degree respectively.in which medium the velocity of light be minimum?

We know that velocity of light in amedium is inversely proportional to the refractive index of the medium from the equation

  n = c / v  .............(1)

Moreover the refractive index of the medium is inversely proportional to the angle of refraction for the same angle of incidence from the equation

  n = sin i / sin r  ..............(2)

From (1) and (2) ,it is clear that velociy of light in a medium is directly proportional to the angle of refraction in that medium at a particular angle of incidence.

Thus the velocity of light is minimum in medium A  where the angle of refraction is minimum.

Speed of light in a medium is inversely proportional to the refractive index of the medium. Since lesser the refraction angle, higher the refractive index, thus the speed of light is minimum in the last medium.

Answer is medium C

Medium C

In medium c as the angle of refraction is highest. hence its denser.therefore velocity is minimum.

Velocity will be minimum in medium A since , When ray of light goes from one medium to other, it deviates and deviation depends on whether media is more denser or rarer and alo on angle of refraction . That means angle of refraction will be less if it deviates more and it will be more if it deviates less . So on this basis we can say that velocity will be more in such media where angle of refraction will be less.

Since n= c/v
also n=sin i/sin r

which implies, sin i/sin r = c/v
since both c and sin i are constant (c is the speed of light in air, and according to the question, it says, its the same angle of incidence)
therefore, v = sin r
Since, sin 15 < sin 25 < sin 35

Hence, the velocity of the light will be minimum in medium A.

Speed of light in a medium v and refractive index μ of that medium are related as follows
begin mathsize 12px style mu space equals space c over v comma space w h e r e space c space i s space s p e e d space o f space l i g h t space i n space a i r end style
refractive index is given bybegin mathsize 12px style mu space equals space fraction numerator sin space i over denominator sin space r end fraction comma space i space a n d space r space a r e space a n g l e space o f space i n c i d e n c e space a n d space r e f r a c t i o n space r e s p e c t i v e l y end style
for a given angle of incidence, angle of refraction is less in a medium compare to other medium means refractive indexof that medium is more.

hence in the given problem medium A is giving minum angle of refraction 15°. Hence refractive index of medium A is highest.

if refractive index is maximum in medium A means, speed of light is minimum in medium A

Velocity of light will be minimum when refractive index will be high. Because R.I = 1/velocity of light in medium

When refractive index is high then angle of refraction will be less as ray bends towards normal.

Therefore refractive index of medium A will be more since the angle of refraction in it us the least.

And since refractive index of medium A is highest then velocity will be lowest or minimum in it.

Therefore the answer: medium A

As per Snell’s law we have, N=sin I/ sin r =c/v For given i, v proportional to sin r r is minimum in medium A, so velocity of light is minimum in medium A.
  • 1
As we know that refractive index n= sin I / sin r so refractive index in media A = sin I/sin 15 and media B is = sin I/sin 25 and media 3 is sin I/ sin 35 and refractive index is inversely proported to angle r so refractive index of media A>B>C respectively. So speed in media A would be lowest

The answer is in this way

n=c/v-------(1) n=sini/sinr------(2) From(1) and (2) it is clear that, sini/sinr=c/v i.e v is directly propotional to sinr So, In Medium A, velocity of light is minimum

The velocity of light would be minimum in A (15?) because it seems to be a denser medium than others so in denser medium the light ray will bend towards normal.
So ans A is correct
