Let's understand it with an example. 
The zebra, horse, and donkey are different species of the same genus i.e. Equus. We can say that the genus Equus comprises various species which are related to each other in some of their characteristics. The species of Zebra (quagga), horse (caballus) and donkey (asinus) have more characters in common in comparison to species of other genera like Felis which comprises of small and medium-sized cat species.
