Give a brief account of the first day of the narrator in the land of apples.

The first day in the land of apples was bitter cold, with the ground still under a cover of snow. Amidst the din of the morning bell, the clattering feet of the students and murmuring voices, the narrator realised once and for all that her freedom was lost. Escorted by a white-haired white woman, she joined the rest of the Native American children in the schoolroom. She felt ashamed that her blanket was taken from her but she found that the other girls did not feel the same way. After a man at the end of the hall said grace, they began eating their meal. The narrator cried, not knowing that more hardships awaited her. One of the girls who knew a little English brought the news that their long heavy hair was to be cut. This was incredibly humiliating since among the narrator's people, long hair was a symbol of pride and honour. She hid under a bed in an empty room, but was dragged out kicking and screaming. Her hair was cut and shingled, which was a sign of cowardice in her culture. Weeping, she yearned for her mother; but she knew that no maternal comfort would come. She knew that it was now her fate to be herded about like animals by a foreign people.
