Give a chemical test to distinguish between Dil.HCl , dil. HNO3 & dil. H2SO4.

Dear student

1) To distinguish between dil. H2SO4 and dil. HCl and HNO3
We add a solution of BaCl2 to both acids.  dil H2SO4 reacts with BaCl2 to give a white precipitate of BaSO4 and dil. HCl and HNO3 does not react with it.

H2SO4(aq) + BaCl2(aq) →→BaSO4  (s) + H2O (l)
2) To distinguish between HCl and H2SO4  HNO3
On addition of silver nitrate to the acids, only HCl forms while ppts of AgCl rest of the acids show no reaction.

HCl + AgNO3 gives HNO3 + AgCl (white ppt)

Hence , from the above two reactions, the acid giving ppt with BaCl2 is sulphuric acid, the acid giving ppt with AgNO3  is HCl and the one remaining is HNO3
