Give a reason why atom bomb was used in 2nd world War?

In August 1945 the USA dropped two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The same was done to force Japan to surrender, to avoid a long war in the Pacific. And then, in some days Japan surrendered.
