Give a test for nitric acid........

Dear student,
Libermann's Nitroso Test: This test is perfect to distinguish between secondary and tertiary amine as, it is not performed by primary amines.

In this test, the different products of amines treated with nitrous acid, are further treated with phenol and conc. H 2 SO 4 and the products are measured as follows;

  1. Secondary amine : It gives an oily compound as nitrosoamine, which gives green color when treated with Libermann's reagent (benzene + conc, sulphuric acid)

 2. Tertiary amine : It gives unstable nitrite with nitrous acid in cold solution, however, it further converts into nitrosoamine and gives test with Libermann's reagent.
