Give an account of the administration of thecholaempire

Dear Student,

The Chola Government during the imperial period in 850 – 1200 CE, considered as representatives of God and they were praised as idols in temples. Their kingship was hereditary in nature. They were divided into nine provinces, called “Mandalams” which was again divided into a number of districts, or zillas called as “Valanadus”. Each Valanadu was splitted into a number of villages, called Nadus. They had three major administrative divisions namely: Central Government, Provincial Government and Local Government.

The Cholas capital was Tanjore and the larger towns were known as Taniyurs. The Nadu shouldered administrative activities like taxe collection, justice decisions, settling disputes, land accounts, etc. A Sabha had separate committees performing functions like irrigation, gardens, temples and many more. Under the supervision of the Chola government, Vellala caste, rich peasants controlled the affairs of the Nadus .

The Chola kings often donates and grant land grants or Brahmadeya to Brahmins. An assembly or Sabha of prominent Brahmin landholders looked after each  one of Brahmadeya, while associations of traders, known as Nagarams, looked after the administration in towns and cities. The decisions taken by these Sabhas were recorded on the walls of the temples prescribes in the form of inscriptions.
The Uttaramerur inscriptions, describes the details and on that basis one person could become a member of a Sabha. The Chola inscriptions depicts several categories of land. Land was named as per the purpose for which it was donated by the Chola kings
.
