give an account of the rise of new cities calcutta madras and bombay?

a. In the latter half of the 
18th century new cities occupied important position under the British. 
b. Calcutta, Bombay, Madras rose to the position of Presidency cities.
.They became the centers of British power
c.These presidency cities were created for administrative purposes and convienence
d. Important trade in these cities comprised of cotton, cotton textiles, indigo, silk, tea , coffee
 e. Followed by the setting up of factories and expansion of production in the colonies.
f. For instance, the first cotton mill was established in India in 1854, followed by jute mill in Bengal.
g. Indian entrepreneurs played a very important role in setting up of Indian industries as they linked  the British trade with China, Many Indians like Dwarkanath Tagore​,Parsis like  Jamsetjee Nusserwanjee Tata​ became important players in this trade by providing finances and procuring, shipping supplies.
h. With British rule, architectural styles, design and layout of the cities changed. New styles were introduced as new cities were built, new buildings came up.. We may give example of Victorian Terminus in Bombay , reflecting Gothic art and architecture
i.The pointed arches in the buildings and the elongated structures reflected British supremacy
j. Civil lines and the cantonments were establsihed which were symbolic of  British presence.
k. These areas were defined tree-lined streets, regularly divided building plots and bungalows as the main housing type. 
l Churches and cemeteries, clubs, race and golf courses were also established.

m.  Cities under the British were to have better water supply, sewage disposal and drainage facility and were to be less crowded with healthy hygienic conditions and better road connectivity.
