give any 5 difference between progressive wave and stationary wave

Progressive Waves

  1. Every particle of the medium executes periodic motion.
  2. The amplitude of each particle of the medium is same, but there exits phase difference between them.
  3. The distance between two successive crests of a transverse wave and distance between a compression and rarefaction is a wavelength.
  4. The changes in pressure and density of the medium are similar in case of progressive waves.
  5. In a progressive wave, the particle of the medium wave attain a stationary position.
  6. The equation of a progressive wave is,

Stationary Waves

  1. Only the particles other then those at the nodes executes periodic motion.
  2. The phase difference between particles of the medium is same, but amplitude is different.
  3. The distance between three successive nodes or anti-nodes is called a wavelength.
  4. In case of a stationary wave, pressure and density remains almost unchanged at the nodes, while the changes are minimum at the anti-nodes.
  5. In case of a stationary wave each particle attains its stationary position twice during one complete vibration.
  6. The equation of a stationary wave is,

  • 23

1.Progressive waves are mobile where as Stationary waves are not mobile
2.Progressive waves have equation as y=Asin(Wt+phi) where A is amplitude W-> Angular Frequency amd phi->phase Constant  where as Stationary waves have equation y=AsinkxcosWt where k=2pi/lembda
3.Progressive waves are more  Penetrating in nature than stationary waves
4.In progressive wave every particle oscillates whereas in stationary waves only antinodes are set to ma ximum displacement.
5. Progressive waves have acceleration different from Stationary waves
