The children in the slums led a very unhygienic life. Their houses were in ruins and streets were too narrow. There were no proper drainage systems and so the places were filthy. The sky was bluish black in color due to the pollution made by poisonous elements like lead. The children did not have proper food and so their bodies were deformed. They suffered from many diseases. The situation in which they lived was pathetic. It was totally different from the bright, optimistic and high-speed life of the rich world outside the slums.
