Gases like methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide etc are greenhouse gases. They absorb the infrared radiations (heat energy) and prevent them from escaping back into the atmosphere thus contributing to the phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect. This helps in maintaining a proper temperature of our planet which is important for the survival of living organisms on Earth.
