Coke is not preferred as a reducing agent in the reduction of the oxide of mercury to its metal because metals which are low in the activity series are very reactive and the oxides of the metals can be reduced to its metals by heating in air.
The reducing nature of carbon helps in metallurgy and extract metals from their ores.
2ZnO + C --> 2Zn + CO2
