Give reason why does the layer of the atmosphere become thinner with altitude

Following are the reasons due to which the layer of atmosphere become thinner with altitude:
The first reason is gravity because the earth’s gravity pulls the air as close to the surface. 
The ‘second reason’ is because of the increase in altitude the number of gas molecules that are present in the air decrease.
