Give reasons grapes shrink when kept in concentrated sugar solutions.

A concentrated sugar solution is hypertonic solution i.e., solution with very less solvent (water) and high amount of solute(sugar). When grape in kept in this solution, water will move down the concentration gradient from high water concentration(grape) to low(solution), causing the grape to shrink. Since water always flows from high water concentration to low water concentration

This happens because of exosmosis

Grapes shrinks when kept in concentrated sugar solution because the free movement of water is less outside than inside and hence the water inside the cell starts moving outside. Due to this the cytoplasm shrinks so that the grape.
