The opening of our windpipe and foodpipe are quite close. Inspite of that the food does not go in the windpipe. This is because when you swallow a small ball of meshed food or liquids, a special flap called the epiglottis flops down over the opening of your windpipe to make sure the food enters the foodpipe and not the windpipe.
