Dear student,
The Pickwick Club of London started in 1837 was headed by Samuel Pickwick, who decides to establish a travelling society in which four members journey about England and make reports on their travels. The four members are Mr. Pickwick, Tracy Tupman, Augustus Snodgrass, and Nathaniel Winkle.
During their first journey the Pickwickians meet an angry cab driver, who feels they are informers. So when they are being accused by an angry cabman a crowd gathers. Eventually, the Pickwickinas are rescued by Alfred Jingle, who is an adventurer.
In Chatham, the Pickwickians watch army manoeuvres and meet Mr. Wardle, who invites them to his estate at Dingley Dell. In Mr. Wardle’s estate, Mr. Tupman falls in love with his unmarried sister Rachael. Mr. Snodgrass falls in love with Wardle’s daughter. Though, Tupman is outwitted by Jingle who elopes with Wardle’s sister, Rachael. Mr. Pickwick and Mr. Wardle go after Jingle and Rachael to London, where they hire a lawyer and get rid of Jingle by paying him money. Therefore, they rescued Rachael from an unhappy marriage.
In London Mr. Pickwick takes on a servant called Sam Weller. When Pickwick informs his widowed landlady that he has hired a servant, she assumes that the servant is woman, and that Pickwick intends to marry her. On hearing this Mrs. Bradell, the landlady faints in Pickwick’s arms. Because of the misunderstanding Mrs. Bradell files a suit against Pickwick on breach-of-promise.
After facing numerous adventures, Pickwickians return to the Wardle farm to celebrate Christmas and the wedding of Mr. Wardle’s daughter.
Back in London Mr. Pickwick pays Dodson and Fogg his debt; he sends Jingle and his servant to the West Indies to start a new life. When he learns that Emily Wardle and Snodgrass are going to elope, he convinces Mr. Wardle that Snodgrass is a worthy gentle man who will keep his daughter, Emily very happy. The marriage takes place in Pickwick’s newly purchased home. Sam Weller and a pretty housemaid also get married under Pickwick’s supervision. Though, the Pickwick club is dissolved, Samuel Pickwick is a godfather to many children.
Regards
